Healthy Ramen
Ramen or commonly called “noodles” where I live is often thought of as junk food and loaded with unhealthy stuff. Some instant ramen is not healthy to eat everyday because of the preservatives, but efforts have been made to make them healthy. Since I like ramen or “noodles” a lot, I always look for ways to enjoy ramen without worrying about cancer in the long run. For some, ramen is like the “last resort meal” when one is pressed for time. But in Asia especially in Japan, ramen is considered one of the healthiest meals. Simply because, you can choose the soup based either miso, beef broth, chicken broth or seafoods broth, then just add some veggies or sliced meat. Its a complete meal in one, compared to cheeseburger and fries. You can even make your own ramen noodles from scratch! I stumbled upon this site that teaches “how to make real Japanese ramen from scratch”. Its really cool! It teaches you the step by step process on how to make your very own ramen noodles. I will try this soon. But I think the best ramen is not solely based on noodles, but also the broth. For me it should be 50/50. To make my ramen healthy I do the following:
1. When I boil beef, chicken, or pork for the broth, I remove the grease on top of the broth while its boiling. In this way, I remove excess fat.
2. I put a lot of veggies and less meat.
But when I am really, really craving for ramen and do not have time to boil my own broth, I eat instant ramen but I do the following:
1. I don’t put the sachet with oil in my ramen.
2. I only put half of the seasoning, instead I add an egg for extra flavor and nutrition.
But do you know that we are eating food that we think is healthy when its not? Like energy bars, granola, salads, smoothies with sugar, sushi rolls, and yogurts. The full story here. I was hooked with strawberry yogurt drinks in the past and it made me gain weight in a flash! I stopped drinking them and I lost 3 pounds. Now, I only drink Yakult.
So when you really think about it, ramen is not a junk food. It is healthy, economical and easy to cook.
