Love is in the air! 3 days to go and it’s Valentine’s day cum Chinese New Year as well. Isn’t it great? We will celebrate love as well as another new year! Heh I don’t know about you but I like the awesome feeling of being in love and new year – which means I can start over with my new year’s resolution –  spend less, save more, eat healthy, write down goals, and the list goes on.

So I can’t let Valentine’s day pass without posting something about spicing up our  Valentine’s day by using feng shui.  First get a compass and locate the southwest area of your bedroom, this is the Marriage, Romantic and Happiness area. If you’re single don’t despair, just think that you’re lucky to have ample time to check out Mr. or Ms. Right.

A couple’s bedroom is a place for love and relationship. A place for passion and sexuality. Here’s what to do to let the chi energy of love enter your bedroom:

  • Clean your clutter in the bedroom especially under your bed. The unused furniture or stuff that clutters the bedroom creates a negative energy that may result into fights and misunderstanding of married couples. For single men and women, the clutter will create a dull and stagnant energy that blocks all loving vibrations being sent your way.
  • Remove photos or paintings of loneliness or broken heart. Are there sad photos or paintings in your bedroom? If you have these wall decors, replace it with happy photos or paintings, like a photo of a happy couple.
  • Make a “Love shrine” in the bedroom. Place male and female paired items, like paired Mandarin ducks which is a symbol of marital union and fidelity or items like figurine or ceramic statue of loving couples.
  • Put fresh flowers, candles, and your wedding photo in the southwest corner of your bedroom to boost the positive energy in this area.

Celebrate Valentine’s day everyday,  let your loved ones know how much they mean to you and how much you love them. I do believe that we can achieve everything we set our mind and heart into as long as we strive to make it happen.  Now if you want your ex back, that’s another story!

Not happy with your living room? Maybe it’s time to feng shui your living room to create peace and harmony in your life.

The ideal and favorable location of the living room is in the South-East, characterized by lively, uplifting tree energy.

Tree energy is one of the five elements in feng shui. Some call it Wood energy. When we say uplifting the tree energy, it means using wooden furniture, actual plants, any wood or paper and tall green objects.

But do you know that there are things to avoid in the living room? Here’s the list and why:

Spiky plants – sharp-pointed leaves cuts the chi energy preventing smooth flow in your living room. So plants like palms and yuccas should be avoided. These plants are not safe around kids anyway.

Clutter! – we all know that a cluttered room leads to a cluttered life. In feng shui, to prevent chi energy from stagnating, keep the living rooms free of household clutter and too many decorative objects. Less is more. Ottomans in living rooms are good storage for clutter if you’re having a hard time parting with your stuff.

Closed curtains – we should keep the curtains open to allow energizing sunlight  freely  into the rooms. Keep curtains wide open during the day. You will also save energy by using natural light in daytime.

Over-furnishing – chi energy needs to move so keep furniture to a minimum.

Protruding corners – protruding corners like the sharp corner of a shelf or side table must be covered to avoid cutting the chi energy. You can screen them by using bushy plants or drape them with fabric/tablecloth.

Now after you applied feng shui in your living room but still feels stagnant, a water feature can boost favorable chi energy especially if  placed in the south-east part of the room. You can use an aquarium, a waterfall painting, and the like. Happy reorganizing!

Ever wonder what the Feng Shui expert’s mean when they talk about the eight directions in Feng Shui? I am puzzled myself but I learned that knowing the significance of the eight directions of the compass will help me better in utilizing the principles of Feng Shui. The premise is that a distinctive type of energy is found in different sectors of a home, a room or landscape. These sectors are defined by their directions from the center of a home, a room or landscape which can be determined by an ordinary compass. Knowing the eight directions will help us know the proper placing and relevance of Feng Shui symbols in our home, office, etc. As we all know knowing the movement of the chi energy is one of the core principles in Feng Shui.

So what is the eight directions in Feng Shui? It is a concept that identifies eight different kinds of chi energy in the eight directions of the compass.  It takes the Five Element [Tree (wood), Fire, Soil, Metal and Water] and yin and yang a step further. Below are the basic info you might want to know about the eight directions in Feng Shui to help you manipulate the chi energy:

North – The chi energy is quiet, most active at night and midwinter; the color is off-white; the element is water. It relates to sex, spirituality and isolation.

North-East – The chi energy is strong and piercing and quick to change directions. Most active just before dawn and towards the end of winter; the color is brilliant white; the element is soil. It relates to individuality, strength and competitiveness.

East – The chi energy is active and focused – most intense at sunrise; the color is green; the element is tree (wood). It relates to career and ambitions.

South-East – The chi energy is busy and active, but less sharp than that of the east. Strongest in mid-morning and early summer when the sun is rising in the sky; the color is dark green/blue; the element is tree (wood). It relates to maturity and harmonious progress, long-term relationships (engagements and marriage).

South – The chi energy is fiery, passionate and brilliant, and is most active at midday and in midsummer when the sun is at its highest point; the color is purple; the element is fire. It relates to success and public recognition.

South-West – The chi energy is more settled and slow, and is most active in afternoon and late summer as the sun sinks in the sky; the color is black; the element is soil. It relates to family harmony.

West – The chi energy is relaxed and most active at sunset and in autumn; the color is red; the element is metal. It relates to retirement.

North-West – The chi energy is linked with leadership, organization and planning ahead, and is most active at dusk and in late autumn or winter; the color is silver white; the element is metal.

Using a compass should not be trivial. Any ordinary compass can be used in knowing the eight directions of your home or a room. A jewelry compass would be lovely so that wherever you are, you’ll know the directions. Like in the movie, “Message In A Bottle” written by Nicolas Parks, Therese gave a compass gift to Garret with caption, “So you’ll know where home is.” And Garret realized that he wants to come home to Therese.  Sound mushy I know, but wait till you watch the movie and you’ll see how a compass can be a powerful symbol.

Just when you thought “clearing out” can’t have style, I’d say you’re wrong. A lot of people accumulate a pile of STUFF because they have no style in decluttering. I can see you rolling your eyes because decluttering is simply cleaning, so what does style got to do with it? When I mean by “decluttering style,” I talk about your own way of doing things when you declutter your room, home, office or car.  This include the time when you feel your best – in the morning, during the afternoon and early evening, or late at night. In short, whatever method that works for you. Like you, I’m not a Saint who is clutter free all the time. I have my moments when I don’t want to budge and leave stuff every where. But when I’m up and about especially in the morning and early evening (when I feel my best), I declutter to the max and my stuff cleared, thrown or kept. In Feng Shui, decluttering or clearing out is of paramount importance to attract wealth and money energy. There may be times that despite you’re working hard, finances is slow. It’s like whatever you do in your career and business, luck is elusive. You may not know that by just decluttering, you allow wealth and money energy into your home. For my “decluttering style,” here’s what I do:

1. Love letters/cards from past relationships. THROW EVERYTHING! I read it once before I dispose it. If you can’t part with it, okay, you can keep at least one. Though I never had problems with love letters from past relationships because I made it a point to throw everything after the relationship is over. When I do that its like I am setting the person free and I feel good about myself .

2. Birthday, Christmas and other special cards. Same with love letters, you can throw everything after reading it once. But if you need your greeting cards for documentation for those in LDRs (Long Distance Relationships) keep it, but once you’re finally with your loved ones, I think disposing some of it is okay. I keep mine in clearbooks.

3. Photos. Recently, I attended a debut and the debutant said if there’s one thing she regret not doing in the past, its not taking enough photos of herself. I agree with her. We like to take photos of different events, milestones in our life.  But these photos can cram our homes if we don’t start a system of organizing it. At home, we have albums that house our old photos while I put all the unsorted photos in a photo storage box. But here’s what I did to my old photos. I kept the happy photos and disposed the photos of people I can’t remember and photos that are shabbily taken. In doing so I reduced the photo clutter. Taking photos are great! But you can keep it neat and organized.

4. Gifts from boyfriends, girlfriends or spouse/s. If whenever you see the gift makes you happy then keep it. But if you see the gift and it makes you angry, I’d say give it away to free yourself from negative feelings. You don’t want to attract negative chi into your home. Just surround yourself with stuff that makes you happy.

5. Jewelry and Accessories. I keep my jewelry and accessories organized by using plastic storage box used for storing arts and crafts materials. I line the box with tissue paper to protect my stuff. I have one for my “valuables” and one for accessories. I dispose plastic or metal accessories that are broken and rusty.

Its not easy to say goodbye to our STUFF. But you may need to do it one way or another to attract not just wealth and money energy, but to promote good health and wellness. Happy decluttering!

Modern interior home style is the “it” these days. Gone are the days of dark wooden panelings and dark furniture. The modern interior home designs that I now see have plenty of light, fresh, artsy, alive and very inviting to make anyone a homebody. These wall, decal and window stickers rock! What I like about it – it’s affordable, eye-catching, DIY and it doesn’t damage the walls/windows. You can stick ‘em and remove it when you want to without leaving any residue. Ferm Living designed these fab wall stickers and Emma Jeffs designed the window adhesives. They have stickers/adhesives for every mood and every room, like for a nursery room the animal tower stickers are cute. Check out these fabulous window and wall treatments I found from Feel More Human. My favorites are barcode wall sticker and white clover window adhesive. But if you want something totally different and something unique in your walls, check out the huge Finger Print wall stickers and Power Pole stickers. But there are so many designs to choose from.

In Feng shui, the shapes, materials and colors of objects you put in your home make the chi energy there more yin or more yang. If you like a room to be more yang (active) like your living room, go for the barcode wall stickers. Straight lines are considred more yang. While rounded shapes like the flora wall stickers are generally considered more yin (passive) so this is more suited in the bedroom where you want to get a good night sleep.

Whenever I find fabulous modern interior design/style for homes, I always feel a rush and it makes me happy that I discovered another great idea to design my home sweet home… soon. I can’t wait to move.

These are actually oversized “stone” floor cushions. Amazing isn’t it? I was fooled the first time I saw it. South African textile designer Ronel Jordaan designed these fabulous felted wool stones. The cover of the cushions are 100% merino wool. What I particularly like about these “stone” cushions because of its shape, it prevents “cutting chi.” In feng shui, chi energy should be able to flow well inside and outside the home. It is said that sharp corners on furniture can cause “cutting chi” that can make chi energy swirl that lead to disorientation and confusion, in time, ill health. These “stones” are a winner, aside from you can fool anyone who pays you a visit, it also enhances good feng shui into your home.

This is the beauty in using feng shui,  you can start whenever you’re ready. The more you open yourself to its positivity, you will reap its rewards. My pick for the best feng shui tips for good luck was taken from the TV show I watched in the eve of the Chinese New Year, the title of the show is “Ang Pinaka” (meaning an affix to adjectives expressing superlative degree of the quality). They invited Filipino feng shui experts namely Master Aldric Dalumpines, Master Tony Suvega and Maricel Gaskell. They feautured 10 most effective feng shui tips for good luck, but I will only post 5 of the feng shui tips I have tried myself and found effective.

So here’s my list:

1. Golden Money frog

I got my golden money frog as a gift from a friend. I wasn’t into feng shui that time, but when she gave me the money frog she instructed me to place it facing our main entrance door to attract good luck, specifically to welcome wealth and prosperity. I did what she advised me to do and I felt that the flow of money last year was good compared to the previous years. It is believed that the same way a toad captures his food is the same way it will help you capture wealth.

2. Ang Pow and gold chinese coins

The ang pow with gold chinese coins inside it is my favorite. It’s the reason why I got interested in feng shui. I bought gold chinese coins in a feng shui store for good luck. Antique coins in China had a square hole in the center, through which the yin energy can pass through. The round shape of the coin correspond to the yang energy. Different feng shui applications using coins proved to be lucky. I should know, it worked for me! When I purchased my gold chinese coins, they placed the coins in a quartz singing bowl and use a wooden beater “to activate” its energy. They wrapped my coins in a bill with number “8″ in the serial numbers. I put it in my wallet and ever since, I felt a slight change that money comes easily and it stays.

3. Jade Plant/Money Plant to enhance wealth luck

The jade plant’s fleshy and round leaves like coins made it the popular symbol of wealth and prosperity in feng shui. They said that it takes 10 years for a jade plant to produce flowers and under specific conditions. It is believed that when the flowers of the jade plant blooms, money will begin to flow into the house. The best part is, this plant is sturdy and you can grow it inside your house. Nothing beats having real plants at home.

4.  Using Mirrors for the “Doubling effect”

Mirrors have been widely used as one of the feng shui remedies. The proper way of placing mirrors at home or at work create wonders and misfortune at the same time if improperly positioned. But since we’re talking about attracting good luck, placing a mirror reflecting your dining table in a sense doubles the food in the table. If you noticed, some businesses surround their restaurants or fast food chains with mirrors to create the same thing, to double the customers and sales. There are also some businesses that have a mirror reflecting the cash register in the hope that each bill received or already in the cash register will be doubled.

5. Crystals

The facets of a crystal create a reflecting surface like a small mirror, hence it is ideal to influence the chi energy.  The crystal that I chose was red “”drop” crystal that will help me become known in the www (dreaming is free). Its for good luck to achieve fame.  Its also a good decorative piece when you place different crystals in a glass bowl. Choose the color of the crystal that you like to enhance in your life.

Like any other guides, these are just feng shui suggestions. In the end when you work hard you will achieve the things you aspire for this year.

Pomegranate – this fruit is believed to be a symbol of healthy offspring (children). The many seeds of this fruit is a symbol of fertility luck. Its also a symbol a healthy and active descendant’s luck. According to feng shui experts, here’s what to do: place 5 pomegranates in a couple’s bedroom every morning. The 4 pomegranates should be placed in the 4 corners of the bed and the 5th pomegranate should be placed in the center of the bed. Remove the fruits when its time to go to bed and return it in the morning before the couple leaves the bedroom.

Fertility Dragons – It is believed in feng shui that placing fertility dragons inside a couple’s bedroom brings positive energy especially if the couple is trying to have a baby. Place the dragon on the side where the husband sleeps to “fill” him the needed energy in love making. Just make sure to only use a small dragon because you don’t want your husband to be “too energized” and in effect there will be too much yang energy. Too much yang energy attracts negative energy.

Venus of Willendorf Fertility Goddess – this fertility goddess is a childbearing “talisman.” This talisman was in fact became popular during the ancient times in Europe. It is believed that this talisman brings the needed fertility Chi to couples. The talisman symbolizes a fertile woman.

Fruit Bearing Trees – are also considered fertility symbols in feng shui. The more fruit bearing trees in the backyard means the luckier the couple would be. More children will come to the family. If its not possible to have a tree in the backyard/garden, a couple can place a dwarf fruit tree (see above) in the bedroom or a photo/painting of a fruit bearing tree.

Jade Elephants – elephants are also considered a symbol of royalty, fertility and longevity. In feng shui jade elephant figurines attracts positive energy. It is believed that when a couple “touches” the elephant figurines, it will bring many children to the family. Just make sure to choose elephant figurines with their trunks high up on the air for it symbolizes triumph. And be careful not to touch the elephants everyday if you don’t plan to be the next Duggar family!

When I’m dreamy, I want to have a family as big as the Duggar Family (18 kids). Nyay! But trying to have a baby can be frustrating. Some people try a lot of method that are way too expensive but do not deliver what it promised. If you’re already frustrated and have no more ideas of what to do, maybe you may want to try these enhancers and energizers. Who knows?

When I learned how to blog and more about the www, my day is not complete without opening my pc or laptop, checking my emails and my blog. Its like an extension of my life now that I can’t live without. My lifeline, sanity and cure. On weekdays (work and leisure), I spent about at least 5-8 hours  in front of my pc, on weekends at least 6-10 hours in front of my laptop, it can vary depending on what I’m doodling about. I think I need glasses soon. But I bet there are a lot of people who spent more time in front of their pc than I do. Hence the Feng Shui tips for today is using indoor plants that you can place on top of your home or office desk to counteract the effects of electrical radiation from computers. In Feng Shui, electrical radiation upsets chi energy.

Electrical appliances can have detrimental influence on chi energy, but healthy indoor plants placed nearby help to remedy this.

Example of indoor plants you can try at home are Peace Lilies (Spathyphyllum wallisii). The potted Peace lily above is from windowbox. Peace lilies are hardy indoor plant that are found to be good air cleaners too. The white flowers also add beauty in any room and chi metal energy. Who wouldn’t like to have fresh flowers for free everyday? Try it! You hit two birds with one stone – improved wellness, improved chi energy.

But they discuss the topic vaguely, hence I didn’t understand its significance. So being an enthusiast about Feng Shui, I read and searched about it. It led me to understand that the concept of the Five Elements in Feng Shui is an improvement of the principle of yin and yang. Instead of two types of chi energy, there are five: tree (wood), fire, soil, metal and water. So what are these elements?

Like yin and yang, the Five Elements are linked with seasons and times of day. In Feng Shui, the year is divided into five seasons, rather than four, with an extra season appearing between summer and autumn, called early autumn or late summer. The Five Elements describes a certain kind of chi energy and these can be related to a particular direction based on the way the sun moves around the sky during the day and over the year.

Imagine this…early morning, the sun rises in the east and you feel so charged up and ready for the day, the chi energy is called tree (wood). As the day progresses, you’ll feel the suns fiery power in the south and you don’t even want to go out without a sunscreen, that’s the fire chi energy. Later, the sun mellows and begins to go down in the south-west and settle in the soil chi energy. Night time comes, and the north direction of your home soak in water chi energy.

The 5 Elements can be found in your home: 1) tree (wood) – in a form of wood, paper, etc.; 2) fire – from stoves, fireplaces, lighting, etc.; 3) soil – in the form of china, clay, etc.; 4) metal – from iron, stainless steel, etc.; 5) water – sinks, aquarium, bathrooms, etc.

So what’s the catch in these concepts? The catch is if you know how the Five Elements work, according to Simon Brown (a Feng Shui expert) you can manipulate the existing chi energy in your home which is the basis of many Feng Shui remedies.

I’ll give you example, if you like to enhance tree chi energy in your home, why not paint your walls with vertical shapes. I kinda fancy a vertical black and white paint colors (alternately) in my walls. This will make the room more spacious and making the ceiling higher. Use a good lighting (like lightings from Lumens), to boost fire chi energy in your living room, making it the center of activity in your home. For a cozier home, try soil chi energy by using horizontal or check patterns in pillow cases, bed covers, etc. Lastly, To add water chi energy in your home for a more peaceful flowing atmosphere, you can try wavy or irregular patterns.

I will definitely try this at home. I think using the Five Elements in the different areas of my home depending on what chi energy I want to boost the most will improve my productivity, relaxation and tranquility.
