Vers made these cool wooden casing. What I particularly like about it, aside from a good sturdy protection, it’s also not a bacteria magnet. In using silicone casing, depending on the temperature where you live (I live in a tropical country) “sweating” is inevitable. Hence, the silicon casing becomes sticky and germ factory. I recently watched the TV show “Hoarders” from the Biography Channel about real stories of people hoarding a lot of stuff that fills literally every space of their house. It wasn’t a happy show but I like watching it because it makes me aware that though I’m not a hoarder, it gives me the determination to make my surroundings free from clutter. According to Mayo Clinic:

Hoarding is the excessive collection of items, along with the inability to discard them.  Some people also collect animals, keeping dozens or hundreds of pets in unsanitary conditions.

Hoarding is a mental disorder, also known as compulsive hoarding and compulsive hoarding syndrome. It’s not clear what causes hoarding. Some researchers believe that hoarding occurs on a continuum — some people may simply be considered harmless pack rats, while others have a much more severe form of collecting that is life-threatening. The condition is more likely to affect those with a family history of hoarding, so genetics and upbringing are likely among the triggering factors.

Though this post is about the Ten Commandments of Clutter, I can’t resist to include the topic about “hoarding” because these people also need compassion and understanding. Instead we should help them organize their stuff. If that won’t work, help them seek professional help.

So without further ado, here’s the “Ten Commandments of Clutter” from HMR that will help all of us in maintaining order and organization in our life:

1. Stop procrastinating. Decide what you are going to do with the next piece of clutter you pick up.

2. Quit making excuses. You are only fooling yourself.

3. Use it or lose it. If you’re not going to use it, get rid of it. Period.

4. Learn to let go. For every square foot of space filled with clutter, there is one square foot of living space in your home that is lost.

5. Be a giver. Poor, needy, friends, relatives–everyone benefits more from a giving person than a pack rat.

6. Set limits on the amount of space allocated to any kind of clutter. Limit closets, bookcases, and filing cabinets. When one space fills up it doesn’t mean you should buy more space ( another house).

7. Use the In and Out inventory rule. When something comes in, something goes out.

8. Less is more. Less = more time, money and energy. Also = less stress.

9. Keep everything in its place. For example, the blender doesn’t belong in the bedroom or the mail in the bathroom.

10. Compromise. Stop letting perfectionism keep you from doing what needs to be done, or from letting someone help you dispense with your clutter.

Functioning efficiently is better than functioning perfectly.

Do you smell something good? Ahhh… flowers! Having sweet fresh flowers in my working table uplifts my mood and makes me feel motivated to work. A jade plant is good feng shui in the working area but aromatherapy sounds better. I found another ingenious USB aromatherapy oil burner. All you need to do is just add one drop of Lavender aromatherapy in the little “X” slot included in the package. Wait for the USB device to get warm and presto! Lavender scent spread all over the room. Looks cool huh?  Unfortunately, it doesn’t say if you can also use the USB as a storage device. But what the heck? The smell is heaven.

Love is in the air! 3 days to go and it’s Valentine’s day cum Chinese New Year as well. Isn’t it great? We will celebrate love as well as another new year! Heh I don’t know about you but I like the awesome feeling of being in love and new year – which means I can start over with my new year’s resolution –  spend less, save more, eat healthy, write down goals, and the list goes on.

So I can’t let Valentine’s day pass without posting something about spicing up our  Valentine’s day by using feng shui.  First get a compass and locate the southwest area of your bedroom, this is the Marriage, Romantic and Happiness area. If you’re single don’t despair, just think that you’re lucky to have ample time to check out Mr. or Ms. Right.

A couple’s bedroom is a place for love and relationship. A place for passion and sexuality. Here’s what to do to let the chi energy of love enter your bedroom:

• Clean your clutter in the bedroom especially under your bed. The unused furniture or stuff that clutters the bedroom creates a negative energy that may result into fights and misunderstanding of married couples. For single men and women, the clutter will create a dull and stagnant energy that blocks all loving vibrations being sent your way.

• Remove photos or paintings of loneliness or broken heart. Are there sad photos or paintings in your bedroom? If you have these wall decors, replace it with happy photos or paintings, like a photo of a happy couple.

• Make a “Love shrine” in the bedroom. Place male and female paired items, like paired Mandarin ducks which is a symbol of marital union and fidelity or items like figurine or ceramic statue of loving couples.

• Put fresh flowers, candles, and your wedding photo in the southwest corner of your bedroom to boost the positive energy in this area.

Celebrate Valentine’s day everyday,  let your loved ones know how much they mean to you and how much you love them. I do believe that we can achieve everything we set our mind and heart into as long as we strive to make it happen.  Now if you want your ex back, that’s another story!

To all my visitors and readers, I apologize for not posting much the past months. 2009 has been a roller-coaster ride that took my attention and concentration from blogging. I know from previous experience that when you don’t feel like blogging, don’t blog. You will just end up blogging not from the heart.

If 2009 wasn’t a good year for you, cheer up! because according to feng shui experts and astrologers, 2010 year of the Tiger will bring hope to everyone. The Chinese associate Tiger with good fortune, power, and royalty. This is the best year for those who want to open a business or for those looking for employment. Despite the global economic meltdown, like a Tiger we should face obstacles in life fearlessly. Let it not dampen our spirit. Don’t let depression beat us.

But  are you ready to say goodbye to 2009?  I am.  So here’s a “ritual” you can do to drive away “negative energies” and start good in the year of the Tiger. The purpose of the “ritual” is to let go the “negative energies” in your life. To start the “ritual,” you’ll need a paper and pen or pencil. Fold the paper in three columns.

1. First column, write all the negative things, events, etc. that happened to you in 2009.

2. Second column, write all the negative attitude that you don’t like about you.

3. Third column, write all your “hatred”, “frustrations” and “fears”.

4.  When you’re finished making the list, say these words, “I am letting go all the negative energies in my life. I am ready to move forward and start a new life.”

Now…set fire to it! Light a match and BURN IT! Let all those negative energies turn into ashes.  Just make sure you burn your list somewhere safe. We don’t want you homeless in 2010.

The burning of your “negative list” symbolizes that you are willing to change for the better. Hence, negative energies have no place in your life. Let’s all try to think  positive all throughout 2010 and beyond. I think positive attitude plus positive outlook in life is the key to a successful and happy life. Happy New Year everyone!

Not happy with your living room? Maybe it’s time to feng shui your living room to create peace and harmony in your life.

The ideal and favorable location of the living room is in the South-East, characterized by lively, uplifting tree energy.

Tree energy is one of the five elements in feng shui. Some call it Wood energy. When we say uplifting the tree energy, it means using wooden furniture, actual plants, any wood or paper and tall green objects.

But do you know that there are things to avoid in the living room? Here’s the list and why:

Spiky plants – sharp-pointed leaves cuts the chi energy preventing smooth flow in your living room. So plants like palms and yuccas should be avoided. These plants are not safe around kids anyway.

Clutter! – we all know that a cluttered room leads to a cluttered life. In feng shui, to prevent chi energy from stagnating, keep the living rooms free of household clutter and too many decorative objects. Less is more. Ottomans in living rooms are good storage for clutter if you’re having a hard time parting with your stuff.

Closed curtains – we should keep the curtains open to allow energizing sunlight  freely  into the rooms. Keep curtains wide open during the day. You will also save energy by using natural light in daytime.

Over-furnishing – chi energy needs to move so keep furniture to a minimum.

Protruding corners – protruding corners like the sharp corner of a shelf or side table must be covered to avoid cutting the chi energy. You can screen them by using bushy plants or drape them with fabric/tablecloth.

Now after you applied feng shui in your living room but still feels stagnant, a water feature can boost favorable chi energy especially if  placed in the south-east part of the room. You can use an aquarium, a waterfall painting, and the like. Happy reorganizing!

Now that we know the different directions in feng shui, its time to find the most auspicious and advantageous working area to apply feng shui, specifically our desk and chair and/or working area. In doing this, it is believed in feng shui that you will have a better working condition and will help you achieve your goals.

“The desk position aligns you with the underlying flow of chi in the room. But the direction you face while sitting at it has the greatest influence.”

Here are the most advantageous position for your working area whether it’s just a small space or a spacious room:

Sitting NW, facing SE – this position enhances leadership, organization, responsibility as well as dignity and trustworthiness. Facing SE is helpful for expansion, creativity and communication.

Sitting NE, Facing E – this position is useful for someone lacking drive, or looking for new direction. It is particularly suitable for people dealing in real estate.

Sitting E, facing E – the chi in this position is even more intense, favoring quick starts and fast growth. This is excellent for anyone starting a new career or business, particularly in the computer or electronics industry.

Sitting E, facing SE – this position is similar to E facing E, but the atmosphere is less intense, bringing out qualities conducive to communication, creativity and harmonious development. People working in the media or travel business are likely to find this supportive.

Sitting E, facing S – this position is active, busy and helpful for putting ideas into practice. It is also supportive of public recognition and promotion, so would suit someone in PR, sales and advertising. But his is not a good position if you feel restless and find it difficult to concentrate.

Sitting SE, facing E – this position is similar to sitting in E facing SE, only the relative importance of the directions is reversed. The location of the desk determines the underlying chi energy present. But the direction you face has the greatest influence, so the E is dominant.

Sitting SE, facing S – this combination of energies is ideal for people working in PR, marketing or any activity that involves communication. It is also good for lawyers. The chi energy here is very active, so is not advisable for someone who becomes easily stressed or excited.

Sitting W, facing E – in the W position, you are immersed in the chi energy related to income, contentment and pleasure. Facing E helps you to become more ambitious, active and better able to put your ideas into practice. It is particularly helpful for people working in finance.

If you noticed the common auspicious position for the desk and chair/working area is either facing East or South, where the sun shines. Helping you to take advantage of feng shui ways to achieve your goals. I positioned my desk and chair/working area sitting E, facing E for the fast growth of my blog. I think it won’t hurt if you’ll try some of these advantageous position. Based on my personal experience, I can say that my blog’s traffic went up and I now have 58 subscribers. Ever wonder what the Feng Shui expert’s mean when they talk about the eight directions in Feng Shui? I am puzzled myself but I learned that knowing the significance of the eight directions of the compass will help me better in utilizing the principles of Feng Shui. The premise is that a distinctive type of energy is found in different sectors of a home, a room or landscape. These sectors are defined by their directions from the center of a home, a room or landscape which can be determined by an ordinary compass. Knowing the eight directions will help us know the proper placing and relevance of Feng Shui symbols in our home, office, etc. As we all know knowing the movement of the chi energy is one of the core principles in Feng Shui.

So what is the eight directions in Feng Shui? It is a concept that identifies eight different kinds of chi energy in the eight directions of the compass.  It takes the Five Element [Tree (wood), Fire, Soil, Metal and Water] and yin and yang a step further. Below are the basic info you might want to know about the eight directions in Feng Shui to help you manipulate the chi energy:

North – The chi energy is quiet, most active at night and midwinter; the color is off-white; the element is water. It relates to sex, spirituality and isolation.

North-East – The chi energy is strong and piercing and quick to change directions. Most active just before dawn and towards the end of winter; the color is brilliant white; the element is soil. It relates to individuality, strength and competitiveness.

East – The chi energy is active and focused – most intense at sunrise; the color is green; the element is tree (wood). It relates to career and ambitions.

South-East – The chi energy is busy and active, but less sharp than that of the east. Strongest in mid-morning and early summer when the sun is rising in the sky; the color is dark green/blue; the element is tree (wood). It relates to maturity and harmonious progress, long-term relationships (engagements and marriage).

South – The chi energy is fiery, passionate and brilliant, and is most active at midday and in midsummer when the sun is at its highest point; the color is purple; the element is fire. It relates to success and public recognition.

South-West – The chi energy is more settled and slow, and is most active in afternoon and late summer as the sun sinks in the sky; the color is black; the element is soil. It relates to family harmony.

West – The chi energy is relaxed and most active at sunset and in autumn; the color is red; the element is metal. It relates to retirement.

North-West – The chi energy is linked with leadership, organization and planning ahead, and is most active at dusk and in late autumn or winter; the color is silver white; the element is metal.

Using a compass should not be trivial. Any ordinary compass can be used in knowing the eight directions of your home or a room. A jewelry compass would be lovely so that wherever you are, you’ll know the directions. Like in the movie, “Message In A Bottle” written by Nicolas Parks, Therese gave a compass gift to Garret with caption, “So you’ll know where home is.” And Garret realized that he wants to come home to Therese.  Sound mushy I know, but wait till you watch the movie and you’ll see how a compass can be a powerful symbol.

I stumbled upon a blog that showcase DIY on how we can maximize our working space and achieve a clutter free desk. It inspired me to try it myself but for now, I want to share to all of you this ingenious way of hiding all the unruly cords of pc, laptop, speakers, USB hub, mouse, etc. and other gadgets as well. You name it, everything can now be “invisible.”  Van Mardian of decluttered.com is kind enough to allow me to repost some photos of his work and from other contributors. Basically, using wooden pegboard and some wires is all you need to achieve this awesome DIY. So without further ado, here’s the before and after photos:

So you get the idea? Hiding all the cords and small gadgets under the desk. A DIY that’s easy to do and functional. My next post will talk about positioning your desk and chair that is considered most advantageous in Feng Shui. Watch out for it.
