Love iPhones? You should because it’s the coolest mobile phone on the planet. I love their different applications, touch screen and sleek design. Many products came out in the market to protect your beloved iPhone, like invisible shield and silicone case,  but when I saw this wood iPhone shellcase and slipcase from Think Geek, I was blown away. Vers made these cool wooden casing. What I particularly like about it, aside from a good sturdy protection, it’s also not a bacteria magnet. In using silicone casing, depending on the temperature where you live (I live in a tropical country) “sweating” is inevitable. Hence, the silicon casing becomes sticky and germ factory. It is  eco-friendly as well because it is made of bamboo. As we all know, bamboo is a grass and always an available abundant source. If you want something more fancy, you can choose  Walnut or Cherry wood. In feng shui, wood is considered yin. Using wooden casing is particularly beneficial for yang people. It balances the yin and yang in you. Too much yang means unrest.

Ever wonder what the Feng Shui expert’s mean when they talk about the eight directions in Feng Shui? I am puzzled myself but I learned that knowing the significance of the eight directions of the compass will help me better in utilizing the principles of Feng Shui. The premise is that a distinctive type of energy is found in different sectors of a home, a room or landscape. These sectors are defined by their directions from the center of a home, a room or landscape which can be determined by an ordinary compass. Knowing the eight directions will help us know the proper placing and relevance of Feng Shui symbols in our home, office, etc. As we all know knowing the movement of the chi energy is one of the core principles in Feng Shui.

So what is the eight directions in Feng Shui? It is a concept that identifies eight different kinds of chi energy in the eight directions of the compass.  It takes the Five Element [Tree (wood), Fire, Soil, Metal and Water] and yin and yang a step further. Below are the basic info you might want to know about the eight directions in Feng Shui to help you manipulate the chi energy:

North – The chi energy is quiet, most active at night and midwinter; the color is off-white; the element is water. It relates to sex, spirituality and isolation.

North-East – The chi energy is strong and piercing and quick to change directions. Most active just before dawn and towards the end of winter; the color is brilliant white; the element is soil. It relates to individuality, strength and competitiveness.

East – The chi energy is active and focused – most intense at sunrise; the color is green; the element is tree (wood). It relates to career and ambitions.

South-East – The chi energy is busy and active, but less sharp than that of the east. Strongest in mid-morning and early summer when the sun is rising in the sky; the color is dark green/blue; the element is tree (wood). It relates to maturity and harmonious progress, long-term relationships (engagements and marriage).

South – The chi energy is fiery, passionate and brilliant, and is most active at midday and in midsummer when the sun is at its highest point; the color is purple; the element is fire. It relates to success and public recognition.

South-West – The chi energy is more settled and slow, and is most active in afternoon and late summer as the sun sinks in the sky; the color is black; the element is soil. It relates to family harmony.

West – The chi energy is relaxed and most active at sunset and in autumn; the color is red; the element is metal. It relates to retirement.

North-West – The chi energy is linked with leadership, organization and planning ahead, and is most active at dusk and in late autumn or winter; the color is silver white; the element is metal.

Using a compass should not be trivial. Any ordinary compass can be used in knowing the eight directions of your home or a room. A jewelry compass would be lovely so that wherever you are, you’ll know the directions. Like in the movie, “Message In A Bottle” written by Nicolas Parks, Therese gave a compass gift to Garret with caption, “So you’ll know where home is.” And Garret realized that he wants to come home to Therese.  Sound mushy I know, but wait till you watch the movie and you’ll see how a compass can be a powerful symbol.

Modern interior home style is the “it” these days. Gone are the days of dark wooden panelings and dark furniture. The modern interior home designs that I now see have plenty of light, fresh, artsy, alive and very inviting to make anyone a homebody. These wall, decal and window stickers rock! What I like about it – it’s affordable, eye-catching, DIY and it doesn’t damage the walls/windows. You can stick ‘em and remove it when you want to without leaving any residue. Ferm Living designed these fab wall stickers and Emma Jeffs designed the window adhesives. They have stickers/adhesives for every mood and every room, like for a nursery room the animal tower stickers are cute. Check out these fabulous window and wall treatments I found from Feel More Human. My favorites are barcode wall sticker and white clover window adhesive. But if you want something totally different and something unique in your walls, check out the huge Finger Print wall stickers and Power Pole stickers. But there are so many designs to choose from.

In Feng shui, the shapes, materials and colors of objects you put in your home make the chi energy there more yin or more yang. If you like a room to be more yang (active) like your living room, go for the barcode wall stickers. Straight lines are considred more yang. While rounded shapes like the flora wall stickers are generally considered more yin (passive) so this is more suited in the bedroom where you want to get a good night sleep.

Whenever I find fabulous modern interior design/style for homes, I always feel a rush and it makes me happy that I discovered another great idea to design my home sweet home… soon. I can’t wait to move.

Pomegranate – this fruit is believed to be a symbol of healthy offspring (children). The many seeds of this fruit is a symbol of fertility luck. Its also a symbol a healthy and active descendant’s luck. According to feng shui experts, here’s what to do: place 5 pomegranates in a couple’s bedroom every morning. The 4 pomegranates should be placed in the 4 corners of the bed and the 5th pomegranate should be placed in the center of the bed. Remove the fruits when its time to go to bed and return it in the morning before the couple leaves the bedroom.

Fertility Dragons – It is believed in feng shui that placing fertility dragons inside a couple’s bedroom brings positive energy especially if the couple is trying to have a baby. Place the dragon on the side where the husband sleeps to “fill” him the needed energy in love making. Just make sure to only use a small dragon because you don’t want your husband to be “too energized” and in effect there will be too much yang energy. Too much yang energy attracts negative energy.

Venus of Willendorf Fertility Goddess – this fertility goddess is a childbearing “talisman.” This talisman was in fact became popular during the ancient times in Europe. It is believed that this talisman brings the needed fertility Chi to couples. The talisman symbolizes a fertile woman.

Fruit Bearing Trees – are also considered fertility symbols in feng shui. The more fruit bearing trees in the backyard means the luckier the couple would be. More children will come to the family. If its not possible to have a tree in the backyard/garden, a couple can place a dwarf fruit tree (see above) in the bedroom or a photo/painting of a fruit bearing tree.

Jade Elephants – elephants are also considered a symbol of royalty, fertility and longevity. In feng shui jade elephant figurines attracts positive energy. It is believed that when a couple “touches” the elephant figurines, it will bring many children to the family. Just make sure to choose elephant figurines with their trunks high up on the air for it symbolizes triumph. And be careful not to touch the elephants everyday if you don’t plan to be the next Duggar family!

When I’m dreamy, I want to have a family as big as the Duggar Family (18 kids). Nyay! But trying to have a baby can be frustrating. Some people try a lot of method that are way too expensive but do not deliver what it promised. If you’re already frustrated and have no more ideas of what to do, maybe you may want to try these enhancers and energizers. Who knows?

When I search and visit blogs/sites that talks about Feng Shui, I often encounter a discussion about the Five Elements in Feng Shui. But they discuss the topic vaguely, hence I didn’t understand its significance. So being an enthusiast about Feng Shui, I read and searched about it. It led me to understand that the concept of the Five Elements in Feng Shui is an improvement of the principle of yin and yang. Instead of two types of chi energy, there are five: tree (wood), fire, soil, metal and water. So what are these elements?

Like yin and yang, the Five Elements are linked with seasons and times of day. In Feng Shui, the year is divided into five seasons, rather than four, with an extra season appearing between summer and autumn, called early autumn or late summer. The Five Elements describes a certain kind of chi energy and these can be related to a particular direction based on the way the sun moves around the sky during the day and over the year.

Imagine this…early morning, the sun rises in the east and you feel so charged up and ready for the day, the chi energy is called tree (wood). As the day progresses, you’ll feel the suns fiery power in the south and you don’t even want to go out without a sunscreen, that’s the fire chi energy. Later, the sun mellows and begins to go down in the south-west and settle in the soil chi energy. Night time comes, and the north direction of your home soak in water chi energy.

The 5 Elements can be found in your home: 1) tree (wood) – in a form of wood, paper, etc.; 2) fire – from stoves, fireplaces, lighting, etc.; 3) soil – in the form of china, clay, etc.; 4) metal – from iron, stainless steel, etc.; 5) water – sinks, aquarium, bathrooms, etc.

So what’s the catch in these concepts? The catch is if you know how the Five Elements work, according to Simon Brown (a Feng Shui expert) you can manipulate the existing chi energy in your home which is the basis of many Feng Shui remedies.

I’ll give you example, if you like to enhance tree chi energy in your home, why not paint your walls with vertical shapes. I kinda fancy a vertical black and white paint colors (alternately) in my walls. This will make the room more spacious and making the ceiling higher. Use a good lighting (like lightings from Lumens), to boost fire chi energy in your living room, making it the center of activity in your home. For a cozier home, try soil chi energy by using horizontal or check patterns in pillow cases, bed covers, etc. Lastly, To add water chi energy in your home for a more peaceful flowing atmosphere, you can try wavy or irregular patterns.

I will definitely try this at home. I think using the Five Elements in the different areas of my home depending on what chi energy I want to boost the most will improve my productivity, relaxation and tranquility.

So now that you know whether you are too yin or too yang, its time to keep the ball rolling by infusing yin and yang in your home. In the previous post about yin or yang, knowing if you’re too yin (passive) or yang (active) will solve the imbalance in your life.

The shapes, materials and colors of objects you put in your home make the “chi” energy there more yin or yang. This provides you with ways to alter the “chi” energy of your home to suit your needs.

Imagine your bedroom painted in skyblue, your bed comfy and beddings all white, light full curtains… all these makes a yin environment which is ideal for sleeping. In fastfood restaurants, everything is shiny, bright colored – red, orange, yellow, the surfaces are hard that makes a yang environment and attracts people not to relax but to leave as they finish eating. People reacts to colors, shapes and materials around them. The above bedroom is a sample of a yin environment, pastel colors not too bright just right for a good snooze. The Madera in Moss beddings are all in sale(!) from Inhabit Living. If my bedroom looks like that I won’t leave my bed.

Here’s some yin and yang objects that you can try at home:

floors – more yin: carpets, cork tiles, etc.; more yang: marble, hardwoods, etc.

furnishings – more yin: large cushions, tapestries, etc.; more yang: stone sculptures, mirrors, etc.

window treatments – more yin: full draped curtains, etc.; more yang: shutters, metal slated blinds, etc.

Did you notice that many people like to use the symbol of Yin or Yang? But don’t really know what it means? I’ve seen it on t-shirts, bags, mouse pads, stickers, wall clocks, cufflinks, pendants, iPod skins, as tattoos, and even cosmetic sharpener! You name it, they made a product/art out of the yin and yang design. But what does the Yin and Yang sign really means? In Feng Shui, yin and yang symbolizes two kinds of energies: passive and active or yin or yang, which is one of the fundamental principles of Feng Shui. Yin and Yang are opposition to each other, but also symbolizes complete harmony. This ancient tai chi symbol represents feminine and masculine. Nothing is wholly yin or wholly yang, they complement and depend on each other, hence the famous design illustrating their interdependence – one cannot exist without the other.  Without yin there will be no yang.

The concept of yin and yang offers a comprehensive way of looking at the world and how it affects you. It makes it possible to adjust relationship with people and your surroundings so that you can place yourself in a favorable rather than unfavorable situations. Ultimately, you will be able to use your knowledge of yin and yang to get more out of your life with less effort.

Are you now curious how to apply the concept of yin and yang to improve your life? First is to answer the question, are you too yin or too yang?

To know if you’re too yin or too yang, compare yourself to other people. Are you the type who is relaxed and want things slow and easy while some people wants to hurry you? Or you find them too aggressive and impatient with you? Then you are too yin. Do you find other people too slow, indecisive and quiet that you find yourself becoming irritable and angry with them? Then you are too yang. Some people are always more yin or yang, but some will be more of the middle.

Good Feng Shui is achieved by a proper balance between yin and yang. Too much yin produces too much heaviness and rigidity. Too much yang causes too much unrest and aggression.

Like the author Simon Brown said, if there’s imbalance in your life, the first step is to decide whether you are too yin or too yang. Here’s some of his list of personal yin and yang features:

Body types – more yin: thin, tall, full lips…; more yang: broad, short, thin lips…

Emotions – more yin: depressed, insecure, tearful…; more yang: angry, frustrated, irritable…

Mental qualities – more yin: slower, imaginative, broad-minded; more yang: quick thinking, detailed, precise…

Physical qualities – more yin: weak, tired, slow…; more yang: stiff, strong, fast…

When I learned about the concept of yin and yang, I realized that I am too yin. I like a relaxed life, never hurried, that’s why I guess I dream of living outside the city someday. Where I can enjoy and be closer to nature. I have no difficulty being relaxed but it will take something to keep me more yang (like beating deadlines!). I am more active at night, which is time to relax and is therefore yin and the morning sunshine makes one active therefore its yang. I like sleeping, reading, watching movies, listening to music which are yin influences.

Now that I know I am too yin, I think I need more yang to balance my life and achieve good health. Probably, I’ll do activities to add more yang in my life like for exercise, I can do aerobics; for physical activities, I can do some gardening; for mental activities, I can play chess online, study or do financial accounts. But I think to wake up early in the morning I need clocky or maybe place my bed near the window where the morning sun shines.

Isn’t it cool to know how to balance your life and achieve harmony? The concept of yin and yang is vast, it will even help you use yin and yang in your home! Like choosing materials and colors, if you want more yin or yang in a particular room. The possibilities are limitless! But for now, I will stop here and let you absorb it.
